Common Core State Standards

Each school in the Hermiston School District is focused on implementing the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which reinforce literacy across the content areas and provides a demonstration of higher level thinking skills in mathematics.  Significant investments to Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics also drive our efforts.

On October 28, 2010 the State Board of Education adopted the CCSS, which represent K-12 learning expectations for students in English-language arts and mathematics. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

The Common Core State Standards are the foundation of the Oregon Diploma. The CCSS reflect the same high academic expectations for all students, and have embedded in them the Essential Skills of reading, writing and applying mathematics. Together with personalized learning requirements such as the Education Plan and Profile, the CCSS prepare each student to achieve the Oregon Diploma and for success in college, work, and citizenship. Work on awareness and implementation of the new CCSS began in 2010-2011 for HSD with the goal of full implementation by 2014-2015.

A Common Core State Standards for Parents page is available here, on the Oregon Department of Education Web site.
